Density (Pycnometry) Basics: AccuPyc and GeoPyc UserTraining
August 18, 2026 | 9:00AM - 5:00PM EDT
In Person
Norcross, Georgia
About The Event
Malvern Panalytical is pleased to offer this one day in-person training course at our facility in Norcross, Georgia. Who Should Attend Technicians, analysts, lab managers, researchers, and anyone needing to operate and/or interpret and understand results generated from a gas and solid (dry powder) pycnometry should attend this course. The course will utilize the latest AccuPyc and GeoPyc models (AccuPyc 1350 and GeoPyc 1365), but most course material is also applicable to users of previous models. The course is extremely beneficial to the entry-level operator and moderately experienced users wishing to expand their capability. Preparation A course packet consisting of recorded lectures and e-learning modules must be completed prior to arrival. These will be distributed by the instructors electronically one week prior. The time spent in person with our instructors will be focused on practical elements. Prior hands-on experience with the instrument is helpful but not required to attend. Background The AccuPyc provides a non-destructive, reproducible, and fast measurement of skeletal density of solids, powders, slurries, and liquids by using the volume displacement technique. Using the same concept and a different medium (dry powder instead of gas), GeoPyc can accurately measure the envelope density of solids and formed materials with any type of geometry such as rocks, extrudates, pellets, compacted ribbons, tablets, and caplets. The combination of AccuPyc and GeoPyc for these types of samples can provide very useful information regarding the percent porosity and specific pore volume of the final/intermediate products. With a transverse axial pressure (TAP) mode, it is possible to determine the bulk density of powders at different consolidation forces comparable in a wide range of force which not only can provide bulk density values comparable to those of traditional tap density testers in a significantly more reproducible manner but also give insights regarding to powder compressibility and maximum compaction at higher forces. These instruments can increase the speed and efficiency of quality control analyses, with accuracy, resolution, and advanced calculation features to meet most research requirements. The ease of operation and fast reproducible data collection make them an ideal technology and industry standard for various applications such as pharmaceuticals, catalysts, minerals, metals, battery materials, polymers, medical devices, biomaterials, carbon, asphalt, electronic devices, and many others. Curriculum • An overview of theory and principles of operation of pycnometry • Instrument hardware and software • Analysis modes • Sample preparation and cup/chamber selection • Utilization of all software features and creating methods/SOPs to efficiently obtain accurate and reproducible data • Advanced calculations and editing of all available reports and graphs, including plot overlays, data exporting, and SPC reports using MicroActive software • Operator Maintenance with a member of our Service Department to discuss troubleshooting and user-maintenance Course registration will close one week prior to the course date or as soon as the class is full. This is a popular course, please don't wait to register.
